About Tonga

Tonga is the only Pacific island nation never colonized by a foreign power, and that independence shows in its culture. The 170-island archipelago is spread across three groups—Tongatapu in the south, Ha'apai in the middle, and Vava'u in the north—each with distinct character.

Vava'u is the sailing heartland: a naturally sheltered harbor surrounded by 50+ islands, described by sailors who've visited as one of the world's perfect sailing grounds. The distances are short, the anchorages are protected, and the snorkeling and diving are pristine.

But Tonga's most extraordinary experience is unique in the world: from July to October, humpback whales migrate to Tongan waters to breed and calve. With the right permit and a respectful approach, you can slip into the water alongside a 40-ton humpback and her calf. It is one of the most profound wildlife encounters on the planet, and it is legal only in Tonga.

What to Expect

  • Swim with humpback whales (July–October)—legal only in Tonga
  • Perfect natural harbor in Vava'u with 50+ islands
  • Short, manageable sailing distances between anchorages
  • Pristine reefs and exceptional snorkeling and diving
  • Authentic Polynesian culture largely unchanged by outside influence
  • Significant night-sky visibility far from light pollution
