About Pacific Northwest

The Pacific Northwest sailing region spans from Puget Sound in Washington State north through British Columbia to Desolation Sound, one of Canada's most beloved cruising destinations. The scenery is extraordinary: snow-capped peaks reflected in calm waters, old-growth forests dropping to the shoreline, and a wildlife density that rivals anywhere in the world.

Orca whales, humpbacks, sea otters, bald eagles, black bears, and seals are regular sailing companions. The anchorages range from the bustling marinas of the San Juan Islands to completely remote BC coves where you'll hear only the sound of the forest and sea. Desolation Sound—despite the ominous name—is one of the most beautiful cruising areas in North America, with warm (for the Pacific Northwest) waters and spectacular mountain scenery.

The sailing is variable—calm inland waters in the San Juans give way to tidal rapids and open coast passages in BC. This is a region that rewards sailors with some experience, though the San Juans alone offer excellent cruising for beginners. Best season is June through September.
