About New England
New England sailing is steeped in history and character. Maine's rockbound coast is the crown jewel—thousands of islands, historic fishing villages, and some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in North America. The water is cold (it keeps the crowds away), the lobster is extraordinary, and the culture feels genuinely old and authentic. Penobscot Bay and the waters around Mount Desert Island are exceptional sailing grounds.
Further south, Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay is the historic heart of American yachting—Newport has hosted America's Cup races and maintains a sailing culture unlike anywhere else in the country. Massachusetts' Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket offer classic summer sailing with beautiful harbors, excellent provisioning, and the summer energy of iconic American resort towns.
The prime season is June through September. August is peak, with warm temperatures and reliably good sailing conditions. Late September brings foliage color to the Maine coast, creating one of the most beautiful sailing backdrops in the world.
