About Abacos

The Abacos are the Bahamas' best-kept sailing secret. Located in the northern Bahamas, this boomerang-shaped chain of islands forms a protected cruising ground that sailors have treasured for decades. The Sea of Abaco is sheltered by the outer barrier cays, creating calm conditions even when the Atlantic is rough.

The historic settlements of Hope Town, New Plymouth, and Man-O-War Cay are gems—pastel-painted New England-style houses built by Loyalists who arrived after the American Revolution. Hope Town's striped lighthouse is one of the most photographed in the Bahamas. Each settlement has its own character, from the bustle of Marsh Harbour (the main provisioning hub) to the quieter anchorages further south.

The Abacos tend to attract sailors who've done the Exumas and want more: better sailing conditions, more authentic settlements, and a genuine cruising community.

What to Expect

  • Protected cruising grounds with consistent winds
  • Historic Loyalist settlements worth exploring on foot
  • Excellent provisioning in Marsh Harbour
  • Strong local sailing community and camaraderie
  • Good snorkeling on the outer reef
  • Quieter and more authentic than the Exumas
